New England Conservatory Conducting Symposium (posted 4-28-08)


Join a select group of only seven participants for Encountering Music: a Symposium for Conductors led by Frank Battisti and Charles Peltz. The five day symposium will be held June 22 - 26 at New England Conservatory in Boston.  Each day participants will spend the morning in classes with the faculty focusing on in depth score study and analysis and the creative process that comes from such work.  The afternoon is spent learning while conducting professional ensembles.  Past participants have come to the Symposium with experiences ranging from leading school ensembles to conservatory DMA students to professional conductors.  More information can be found at

2008 Wind Band Institute - Concordia College (posted 3-16-08)


Please join us on the campus of Concordia College in Moorhead, MN for the 2008 WIND BAND INSTITUTE. The event takes place June 23-26, 2008 and is designed for wind band educators at all levels of instruction. Our special guests for the 2008 WBI are Robert A. Duke and Andrew Boysen, Jr.


Dr. Duke is Director of the "Center for Music Learning" at the University of Texas-Austin, and author of the highly acclaimed "Intelligent Music Teaching" - a book that all WBI attendees will receive as part of their registration. Dr. Duke is also author of the beginning band method "The Habits of Musicianship" in which principles of effective instrumental music instruction are embedded.


Internationally acclaimed composer Andrew Boysen, Jr. will share his insights as both composer and conductor with all participants. Dr. Boysen is Director of Bands at the University of New Hampshire and in continual demand as both a commissioned composer and guest conductor.


2 Full-Tuition Scholarships are available for instrumental music educators in their first three years of full-time teaching. Information and application instructions for these scholarships is available at the WBI website.


NEW for 2008 is a special registration fee for attendees who are undergraduate music education majors.


For practicing educators, both Continuing Education and Graduate Credits are available.

University of North Texas Conductor’s Collegium (posted 3-8-08)

Conducting repertoire will be selected from the upcoming book Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, Volume 7, grade 2-3.


Clinicians for this years workshop are Eugene Migliaro Corporon and Dennis Fisher from the University of North Texas, as well as Jack Stamp from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and John Whitwell from Michigan State University.


The Collegium presents an opportunity for instrumental music educators of all levels from around the world to meet and discuss common goals, shared concerns, and practical solutions with colleagues, performers, and composers. The format is designed to allow maximum flexibility in examining topics that are of paramount interest to the participants. As many as 40 conductors will be selected to rehearse and perform on one of four concerts with the North Texas Wind Symphony. Non-conducting participants will follow scores and listen to the clinicians via headphones, allowing all to learn the repertoire and stay integrally involved as the rehearsals progress.


In addition, Mr. Corporon and guests will offer lectures and lead discussions throughout the twelve-day session on a variety of related subjects. Morning sessions will focus on seven selected masterworks as well as rehearsal skills and conducting technique.

2008 CCM Conducting Workshop (posted 2-25-08)

Dear Colleague:


The University of Cincinnati and the College Conservatory of Music is pleased to announce the offering of the 2008 CCM Conducting Workshop from July 22-25 (Tuesday through Friday), 2008 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

This workshop is designed to address the needs of today’s public school conductor/educator. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or just finishing your first year of teaching, this workshop is for you.

Participants are asked to bring to the workshop three recently conducted works, regardless of the degree of difficulty. The lab ensemble will be composed of workshop participants who will be joined by members of the renowned CCM Wind Symphony.

Each conducting opportunity will be videotaped, followed by one-on-one critique sessions.

Special emphasis will be placed on:

     Score preparation and analysis

     Left and right hand interaction

     Mixed meter conducting

     Accompanimental conducting

     Rehearsal techniques

Join Professor Rodney Winther as the weeklong workshop marks his 25th year of hosting an annual summer conducting symposium. Also, please note that the CCM Conducting Workshop will not take place during the following summer of 2009 due to the hosting of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) on the campus of the College Conservatory of Music.

Eighteen (18) participant slots will be chosen on a first come, first served basis with observer slots available to remaining applicants.  Information regarding housing, fees, credit and application will be made available in the coming weeks and the application screening process will begin on March 1. This workshop will offer conducting experience in front of a large concert band each day. Conducting participants will be videotaped during each session with the live ensemble.
Auditors participate fully in all sessions but do not conduct the large ensemble.

Lectures and instructional sessions will include:

     Basic and advanced conducting techniques

     Score study and analysis techniques

     Rehearsal techniques

     Verbal and non-verbal communication skills

     Private conducting lessons

General Information: Space is limited to twelve participants, therefore early application is recommended to ensure a place.  There is no limit on the number of auditors who may attend.

Oregon Conductors Symposium (posted 2-25-08)


Dear Colleague,

I am pleased to announce that Rodney Winther of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music will be the featured guest clinician at this years Oregon Conductor’s Symposium at Portland State University. As a participant, you will have an opportunity to obtain graduate credit while refining and enhancing your conducting techniques with two skilled and experienced clinicians during a five-day intensive workshop with Oregon’s own 234th Army Band.

The Workshop will once again be held on campus at Portland State University in Portland Oregon during the week of June 16th through June 20th.  College credit is also available for an additional fee. Dear Colleague:


The University of Colorado and the College Band Directors National Association will be offering the CBDNA Conducting Symposium for band conductors from June 16-20, 2008 in Boulder, Colorado.


Thomas Lee and guest composer, John Mackey, will be joining me in six hours per day of intensive exploration of expressive conducting technique, repertoire, rehearsal techniques, analysis, and interpretation of scores.  Jim Cochran from Shattinger Music will be here to share his amazing knowledge of music, publishers, contacts and will have a large selection of scores, books, CDs, DVDs and everything else imaginable available.


This workshop is intended for the experienced conductor who would like to sharpen skills, expand knowledge of repertoire and stimulate creativity.


Two levels of participation are available:


1.  The Conductor-participant will conduct for evaluation in the morning hours and participate in seminars in the afternoon.  (Only 22 conductors, selected by earliest postmarked return of application, will be accommodated.)


2.  The Observer-participant will observe the morning sessions and participate in seminars in the afternoon.  This track is not only of value to the student of conducting but serves as a master class to the teacher of conducting as well.


For both the advanced professional and the advancing professional, this week will be informative, supportive, and developmental.


In addition to the class sessions, a resource room loaded with scores and recordings will be available before and after each day’s activities.


On-campus housing will be available upon request.


You may take the course for optional tuition credit through the University of Colorado Division of Continuing Education.  The course will be offered as Independent Study Music, 5018.

Students will attend lecture demonstrations presented by internationally known master teachers and will be videotaped while conducting the Summer Symphonic Band in daily afternoon sessions. Instructors: Robert C. Cameron is Professor of Music and Director of Bands at the Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University and  holds degrees from the Universities of Miami, Michigan, and Maryland. During his tenure at Duquesne, he has been responsible for having brought the wind band program into a position of high national visibility through performances at National Conventions of CBDNA and MENC as well as numerous regional conventions. Dr. Cameron and the Duquesne University Wind Symphony made their Carnegie Hall debut in New York in April 2004.

H. Robert Reynolds is the Principal Conductor of the Wind Ensemble at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. This appointment followed his retirement, after 26 years, from the School of Music of the University of Michigan where he served as the Henry F. Thurnau Professor of Music, Director of University Bands and Director of the Division of Instrumental Studies. In addition to these responsibilities, he has also been, for over 20 years, the conductor of a professional ensemble, The Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings, which is made up primarily from members of the Detroit Symphony. Reynolds` influence upon the wind conducting profession has made a profound impact upon both the approach to conducting and the repertoire of the wind band worldwide.
