New Works for Wind Ensemble (posted 6.11.09) Dear Colleagues;
I invite you to have a listen to three new works from Cornell DMA students in composition
performed by the Cornell Wind Ensemble.
My 'call' to the composers was, "anything goes; try to re-define
what a wind ensemble sounds like." They did.
"Exorcism" by Ryan Gallagher (Jack`s son) is a 4-minute concerto for `death metal drummer,` Derek Roddy and Wind Ensemble. I`ll let you make
your own conclusions. It was quite a hit at the live show.
"Augenblick" by Christopher Stark for Wind
Ensemble and tape processing begins with a sample of the audience applauding in our performance hall and pushes a few boundaries
from there...you`ll hear some Schwantner influences (especially in the piano), but Chris` is a unique voice.
"Outloud"
for jazz piano and wind ensemble
by Ukranian composer Catherine Likhuta is a little more traditional than the first two, but she employs some interesting jazz harmonies and rhythms.
You can listen online or download the tracks from www.cuwinds.com.
Hope everyone is enjoying their summers!
Best,
Cynthia Johnston Turner Director of Wind Ensembles Cornell University

Gran Partita Score Now Available (posted
8.28.08) Dear Colleagues, Many of you probably know that the Library of Congress produced a stunning facsimile of the
original autograph score of the Mozart Grand Partita in 1976. Unfortunately over time the supply of copies
was depleted and there was no funding for additional printings. In 2006, the Educational Projects Committee of the American Bandmasters
Association initiated a collaboration with the Library of Congress and GIA Publications to once again make this musical treasure
available to scholars, conductors, musicians and other interested individuals. This new edition is a beautiful
reproduction of the Library of Congress publication of some thirty years ago. As chair of the ABA Educational Projects Committee I am delighted
to inform you that this new edition is now available from GIA Publications and music dealers across the nation. Richard

Wind Repertory Project Website (posted
8.23.08) Hello colleagues, With another year preparing to begin, I wanted to encourage you to re-visit the Wind
Repertory Project website (www.windrep.org), which is still growing every week as several contributors continue to add information on works for winds and/or their composers.
If you have graduate conducting assistants or any student who is interested in the repertoire of the wind band, this is a
good opportunity for them to contribute in the form of editing or adding works to the database as they work on them for your
ensembles (in fact, incorporating student entries into class assignments has worked out very well for some this past spring
semester). I have also added a section for discussion of rehearsal techniques/tips if you’re looking to contribute something
(or learn something new), you will find this under each work in the "Discussion" area (link at the top left of each
page - this is different from the "Discussion Boards" that can be found on the left hand panel). And as always, if
you’ve run across any errata in scores/parts as you are working, I encourage you to share with your fellow wind band
conductors/enthusiasts and submit them to the WRP for inclusion. Hope your fall semester gets off to a wonderful and productive
start. Sincerely, Nikk Pilato, Ph.D. Assistant Director of Bands Hugh Hodgson School of Music University of Georgia Athens, GA

New Works Premiered by Marine Band
(8.6.08) Over the past year, the Marine Band has premiered two major new works that I would like to bring to your attention. "Scamp"
is Pulitzer Prize- winning composer Melinda Wagner’s first work for band. The piece was commissioned
by the U.S. Marine Band and was premiered earlier this year at MENC’s national conference in Milwaukee. Pulitzer
Prize finalist David Rakowski composed "Cantina" in response to receiving the 2006 Barlow Prize. The
first performance of this work was given at a concert for the CBDNA Eastern Division Conference held in Washington, DC in
March of this year. A recording of "Scamp" can be downloaded for free at the Marine Band’s website. From
the home page, click "Audio Resources" then "Web Exclusives" and finally "New Music Corner." Here
is the complete link: http://www.marineband.usmc.mil/audio_resources/web_exclusives/index.htm#newmusic Beginning in September, the band’s premiere performance of "Cantina" will also be available for free
download at the same location. "Scamp" is available from Presser, and "Cantina" is published
by Peters. I hope you enjoy these two fantastic additions to the repertoire! Best, Major Jason Fettig Assistant Director U.S. Marine Band jason.fettig@usmc.mil

Saxophone in Band Literature (posted 5-23-08) The saxophone professor at Northern
Arizona University, Jonathan Bergeron, is researching the use of the saxophone in band literature.
He is looking for suggestions/opinions for the most significant works for band written within the past 25 years (since
1983) - preferably works that also include substantial or noteworthy saxophone parts (solo or section work). The
suggestions don’t need to be saxophone concertos, just great band literature with good saxophone use.
If you have suggestions you can respond to me at carson.vermillion@nau.edu or directly to him at jonathan.bergeron@nau.edu.
Thanks for your time!

Band Repertoire Evaluation Site Now Open
(posted 5-23-08) Ten years ago, I developed
the REI (Repertoire Evaluation Instrument) to evaluate the quality of the existing Wind Band Repertoire as part of my Ph.D.
dissertation at The Ohio State University. Utilizing lists by prominent conductors, an adjudication panel,
and significant research, the study identified 530 compositions that were deemed to contain a significant level of quality.
Now it’s your turn to help update this list! I have just opened a new
web site that allows anyone familiar with the Wind Band Repertoire to join in on this important endeavor. It
is now time for you to put in your two cents as to what pieces you think are of significant quality. It
doesn’t take long, and you can do as much or as little as you would like to do each time you visit.
In addition, you can add any pieces that are not already
on the survey for others to evaluate.
Of course,
if you would rather not evaluate the repertoire on your own, you will still want to look at the results and maybe even make
comments about your favorite (or least favorite) pieces.
Either way, click the link below (or paste it into your browser), proceed through the simple (and free) registration
process, and come join us!
Special thanks
to Frank Battisti, John Boyd, Craig Kirchoff, Bruce Moss, Stephen Peterson, Timothy Reynish, and Robert Rumbelow for assisting
in the development of this site, and to Mississippi Wind Symphony Web Master Elias Arredondo!
