College Music Society Fifty-First National Conference (posted 1-29-08)

This year The College Music Society will hold its fifty-first national conference in Atlanta, Georgia, September 25-28, 2008. The conference will be held in conjunction with the 2008 National Conference of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction. The ATMI and CMS conferences will be held in the Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel in downtown Atlanta.

2008 World Wind Orchestra Project Seeks Players (posted 1-24-08)

The 2008 World Wind Orchestra Project (WYWOP) will be held July 5-13 as part of the Mid Europe festival in Schladming, Austria. This is an International Wind Ensemble open to anyone age 15-30. Guest conductors include Kevin Sedatole (USA), Felix Hauswirth (CH), and Johann Mösenbichler (A). Professional Development Opportunities for Women Conductors

The League of American Orchestras is pleased to announce an extension of the resources it offers to Women Conductors.  This new three-part initiative broadens the League’s investment in talent and leadership development, in order to impact a traditionally under-served community of artists.  Encompassing League Conference seminars, professional mentoring, and financial assistance for career development, the program reflects an ongoing and meaningful commitment to artistic diversity as well as artistic growth.

League of American Orchestras Announces New Mentoring Circle for First-Time Music Directors (posted 1-7-08)

The League of American Orchestras announces a new mentoring circle for first-time music directors in their first one to two years (orchestras with budgets from $500,000 to $2,800,000).

Led by Diane Wittry, author of “Beyond the Baton: What Every Conductor Needs to Know,” this mentoring circle will examine the challenges faced by conductors as they transition to their first music director position with an orchestra.

Eastern Division of the College Band Directors National Association Conference in Washington, DC (posted 11-4-07)

The "President’s Own" Marine Band, under the direction of Colonel Michael J. Colburn, has graciously agreed to host the Eastern Division of the College Band Directors National Association Conference in Washington, DC from Friday, February 29-Sunday, March 2, 2008.

The rehearsal, meet the composer and artist session and concert will feature an exciting new commission by David Rakowski, currently professor of composition at Brandeis University and also a performance by Phil Smith, principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic. In addition, we will have the opportunity to tour the Library of Congress and the Marine Band library, as well as attend concerts at the Kennedy Center, and observe a mock audition.  Thomas Duffy will present a session entitled, "Leading in a Climate of Anxiety: Can We Address Our fear of Change?”

CALL FOR PAPERS - International Society for the Promotion and Research of Wind Music (posted 10-1-07)

Proposals for papers or lecture-performances are invited for the 18th international conference on wind music of the International Society for the Promotion and Research of Wind Music (IGEB) to be held in Echternach, Luxemburg, July 10-15, 2008.

The deadline for proposals is January 15, 2008.

Papers focusing on the theme of the conference, Wind (Band) Music: Regional traditions – worldwide perspectives, are especially invited, but papers on any aspect of wind music and research in progress are welcome. The lectures can represent the entire field of humanities in relation to wind music -- not only musicology, but also ethnology, philosophy, sociology, and educational sciences. Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes, leaving 10 minutes for discussion. Papers will be considered for future publication in the Alta Musica series.

Proposals of no more than 250 words should be sent no later than January 15, 2008 to Doris Schweinzer, Institut für Musikethnologie (IGEB), Leonhardstrasse15, A-8010 Graz, Austria (
doris.schweinzer@kug.ac.at). Registration materials and further information about the conference may be found at www.igeb.net.

The conference, in Echternach, the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, will be supported by wind band concerts that will provide the international guests with some impressions of the rich Luxembourg band tradition. A specially selected panel of experts, having reviewed dissertations submitted for consideration, will award the Fritz Thelen Prize to the scholar having completed an outstanding doctoral dissertation in the field of wind music. The winning dissertation will be published by IGEB.

The Mid-Atlantic and Northeast of The College Music Society will hold their 2008
SuperRegional Conference April 3-5 at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Hosted by the Sunderman Conservatory of Music, the Society will enjoy the fine music and Conference facilities available in one of the most historic locations in the United States. All members of the Society are welcome to participate in the conference.
