(posted 6.30.08)

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is accepting entries for its third annual Elaine Lebenbom Memorial Competition for Women Composers. Each year, one winner receives $10,000 and the opportunity to have her work played on the DSO’s Classical Subscription Series during the following season. The competition is open to all female composers of any age or nationality; entrants may submit sample scores of up to three completed works, including one scored for full symphony orchestra. The submission deadline is July 31, and winners will be announced no later than December 1. Previous winners include Stacy Garrop (Becoming Medusa) and Margaret Brouwer (untitled work, to be performed in January 2009). Commission Consortium for Cello and Wind Ensemble by Arturo Rodriguez (posted 4-17-08)

Dear Friends,

I would like to invite you to join our commission consortium for an exciting new work by composer Arturo Rodriguez. The piece, yet untitled, will be written for professional cello soloist and wind ensemble (advanced hight school/collegiate level) in a "concerto-type" 10-12 minute piece. The new piece will be dedicated in memory of my good friend Bill Kellerman, a cellist, euphonium player and wonderful educator, who died from cancer this past July.

The composer, Arturo Rodriguez (
http://www.arturosmusic.com/bio.html)) has written many works for orchestras, voice and wind ensemble. We commissioned Arturo last year to write a wind version of his "Mosaico Mexicano" - a wonderful piece that I do believe you should explore. I feel that Arturo will bring an excellent voice to the wind ensemble genre with the "bit of a twist" using a cellist as a central voice in the composition.

Each ensemble/school will receive a full set of parts and score, acknowledgement on the inside cover and performance rights. We anticipate that the piece will be available January 2009.

Details/Schedules include:
$250 due by June 1, 2008.
$250 due upon receipt of the parts/score (Jan. 2009)
Arturo's website:
http://www.arturosmusic.com/bio.html

I do hope you would like to join us in this consortium. If you would like to participate or have questions, please feel free to contact me. The Consortium will be limited to the first 25 schools/individuals which join the consortium.  I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Wishing you all good things,
