Consortium
Commissioning Opportunity – Steven Bryant Concerto for Wind Ensemble (posted 9.12.09)
We are looking
for 14 institutions contributing $2,000 each to form a consortium to commission Steven Bryant to compose the final three movements
of his Concerto for Wind Ensemble. The payment schedule could be: A) $2,000 now, B) 1,000 now and 1,000 in fall of 2010, or
C) 500 now, 500 in the fall of 2010 and 1,000 in January of 2011.
In regard to his ideas for the work, Steven writes:
Here’s what I envision right now, subject to change as I write it, obviously:
Mvt. I - already composed (8’30”)
Mvt. II - extraordinarily quiet throughout - Corigliano`s
"Night Music I" meets Webern`s Six Pieces for Orchestra - based on (and develops from) a transcribed jazz
trumpet solo by my father. The solo Tpt. is behind the audience. DURATION: 10’
Mvt. III - light,
rapid, virtuosic interplay amongst many different instruments. DURATION: 3’-5’
Mvt. IV -
driving, rhythmic machine, growing relentlessly from a simple smoldering beginning, finally culminating in a tutti, homophonic
texture. Reprises material from Mvt. I. I want an epic, exhilarating ending. DURATION: 6’
This would be a major addition to the repertoire, from a wonderful composer of great integrity. If you would have interest
in joining this consortium, please let me know. The consortium members would receive a score and complete set of parts for
their library. There will be a one year period of performance and recording exclusivity limited to the consortium members.
I hope that you will be able to consider joining us.
Commission Consortium - Stephen Newby
(posted 9.12.09)
Dear
Colleagues,
Last spring, I attend a concert by the group VocalEssence in Minneapolis. It was their "Witness
Concert" which highlights black American history. They performed a movement of a Symphony for chorus and orchestra
by African-American composer, Stephen Newby. It was stunning. I have approached Dr. Newby about his interest in
writing a work for chorus and band based upon the speeches of Barrack Obama. He is very much interested in such a project
and has begun work on it.
If you might
be interested in this consortium ($750) membership, contact me for more information.
